Boulder's Clean Energy Future

Boulder's 20-year Franchise Agreement with Xcel is set to expire on August 3rd, 2010, a critical opportunity for the city to negotiate its future energy relationship with Xcel.

Whether Boulder enters into a new 20-year franchise agreement with Xcel or decides to take a more active role in pursuing an independent clean energy path will ultimately be decided by Boulder County voters this November. Should Boulder delay signing the franchise agreement for a few years while the city negotiates more clean energy options with Xcel? Should Boulder ultimately decide to form a municipal utility and take over the generation and management of its own electricity resources?  All these questions are currently being debated in the City Council and among Boulder residents. Clean Energy Action advocates for Boulder to keep all options open as the best, most cost-efficient and fastest path to a clean energy future is pursued. What do you think?
